Topic description
Students taking this topic will select an individual area of interest, in consultation with their supervisor. The selection will depend on the availability of specialist advisers. Study in this area will comprise a survey of the relevant literature and research, and where relevant, an attachment to an appropriate institution for practical experience. The emphasis in this topic will be on the educational implications of the issues investigated.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with an opportunity to explore in depth an area of interest within the field of education that could not be undertaken within the framework of an existing coursework topic
  • enable students to work independently to gain greater insights into their field of interest
  • facilitate in depth knowledge of the literature in their chosen area of education and to analyse and evaluate the literature in order to show its strengths and limitations
Expected learning outcomes
The student learning outcomes will be individually negotiated between the students and their supervisor. However, on completing this topic students will be able to:
  • demonstrate knowledge of the theory and research relevant to their area of focus that is consistent with post graduate standards
  • analyse and evaluate literature in order to show its strengths and limitations
  • demonstrate a capacity for independent self-directed learning
