Course context
Students must undertake a research methods topic and a minimum of 13.5 units of study in a specialisation, at a distinction average, prior to enrolment in this topic.
Topic description
The Dissertation in Education affords students the opportunity of applying research techniques to an issue in or related to education. The emphasis in the dissertation is on the development of skills in the form of research and report writing. The principal outcome of the Dissertation is that graduates will conduct research with an aim to make an original contribution to an area of educational knowledge, policy, practice or management. The research is supervised and results in a report of 18,000 - 20, 000 words.
Educational aims
The dissertation aims to:

  • assist students through supervision in the undertaking of a piece of independent research
  • give students the opportunity to apply research techniques to an issue in education
  • allow students to further develop their research and report writing skills
  • provide an opportunity for students to develop and report on a research project that will make an original contribution to an area of educational knowledge, policy, practice or management
Expected learning outcomes
The student learning outcomes will be individually negotiated between the students and their supervisor. However, on completing this topic students will be able to:

  • prepare a research proposal
  • conduct a literature review
  • produce a piece of academic research
  • demonstrate a capacity for independent self-directed learning
