Topic description
The Doctoral Symposium requires students to explore, analyse and critique issues related to education and their impact on education. Students are expected to actively investigate the connection between specified issues and their own profession or discipline, and to communicate their conclusions in a comprehensive and scholarly way to an academic audience. Students must successfully complete Doctoral Symposium A, Doctoral Symposium B and Doctoral Symposium C before commencing doctoral research studies. Attendance at the Symposium is compulsory.
Educational aims
This topic enables students to view their profession within the broader contexts of education and global issues.

Guest speakers will challenge students with a range of perspectives on these issues, and students will have the opportunity to:

  • investigate, analyse and critique issues presented by these guest speakers
  • broaden their understanding of their own profession and
  • communicate these understandings to diverse audiences
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • determine the appropriate scope for a project related to one or more issues explored in the symposium and their own sector
  • investigate and analyse specified issue(s) with a view to experiencing other perspectives, understanding the issues and their relevance to education, and determining the issue(s) impact on the student's discipline, field or profession
  • critically discuss specified issue(s) that relate to or impact on their discipline, field or profession
  • communicate their conclusions in a scholarly way to an academic panel
