Topic description
Students will identify an appropriate research problem(s) and make a proposal for a research program which investigates the problem(s) posed. Following approval of the study, students will work with an assigned supervisor and submit a research study report of approximately 36,000 words.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to assist students to develop doctoral level research skills and carry out a supervised research study involving:
  • formulating a research plan
  • undertaking data collection and analysis
  • generating defensible conclusions
  • writing a research report with recommendations
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
  • use advanced research skills
  • formulate a comprehensive research project that includes a high level of critical analysis of existing research
  • demonstrate skill in designing doctoral level research questions and linking them to existing research
  • demonstrate advanced skill in selecting, describing and implementing suitable research procedures
  • demonstrate the capacity for in depth analysis and synthesis of findings, drawing conclusions and making recommendations for future study
  • demonstrate the ability to make an original contribution to knowledge construction and/or implementation in educational policy, and/or management and/or practice
