Research design, research methodology, research discipline.

This topic involves the development of a research proposal and an ethics application in preparation for the beginning of the research study and dissertation in the Doctor of Education. Students will attend several seminars with their supervisors to develop a research design that is rigorous, ethical and appropriate for the achievement of the 45000-word research dissertation that forms a principal part of the Doctor of Education. Particular focus is given to the practice of researching the profession and the continuing development of links between the profession and academic scholarship.

This topic aims to:

develop the ability of candidates to appraise different forms of research, choose the appropriate ideas and research approaches to inform a stated research direction;
provide candidates with the opportunity to work with a research supervisor to develop specific research expertise;
develop the ability of candidates to write and speak a research design including general statement and significance, aims and objectives, review of the literature and relevant research, methodological and method, and ethical concerns to peers and an academic audience.
demonstrate the originality and innovation of the research proposal for the profession.

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

write a review of literature and research relevant to the chosen research direction;
outline and justify a particular research methodology and suite of methods appropriate to the research direction;
articulate an epistemological standpoint for the research;
articulate and justify a particular theoretical framework for understanding the chosen research direction;
articulate the significance of the research topic and approach for innovation in the profession;
complete, submit and successfully acquire ethics authorisation for the research project;
successfully write and present a research proposal to an academic and professional panel with relevant expertise.
