Topic description
This topic introduces third level students to major scholarly research practices in the Humanities. It examines some main theories, principles and methods guiding research in the field, and complements these with specific examples. Students will obtain insight into the different research opportunities offered within the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and produce a research proposal based on one of the topic themes. They will be exposed to different research methods through guest lectures and practical exercises. This topic is recommended for students who intend to apply for postgraduate study as well as those who want to gain knowledge of research techniques for their professional careers.
Educational aims
This topic aims to help students:

  • develop a complex understanding of the current research practices and expertise of staff available to supervise honours projects
  • plan and propose independent research projects
  • produce an analytical/creative work relating or contributing to a pre-existing research area within the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences
  • communicate an understanding of the research culture of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and how students might contribute to that research culture
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:

  • have developed a detailed understanding of contemporary research areas in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and how they contribute to broader international research culture
  • have the capacity to extend their understanding of complex research issues into a proposed program of research
  • have demonstrated a capacity to work independently and collaboratively with staff on a research project
