Topic description
Students will undertake study in an English, or English approved, upper level topic worth 4.5 units of study. Students will fulfil the standard requirements of the topic they are enrolled in, in terms of word length and assignment instructions, but will be assessed within the topic at Honours level/to Honours standards. Individual lecturers may negotiate other/different work for Honours students to undertake within this topic.

Contact hours will vary from topic to topic.
Educational aims
Correlates with corresponding undergraduate topic, and in addition:

  • allows students to put into practice research skills gained in ENGL7701

  • further expand students' knowledge and experience of the research tools needed to complete a long essay at Honours level

  • provides students with an opportunity to undertake research at Honours level in an area of literature (or related area) not otherwise available in the English Honours Program

  • develops students' skills and abilities in undertaking research and in tailoring a research project at Honours level

  • provides students with opportunities to engage with an area of literature (or related material) at a specialised level

  • provides an opportunity for students to further demonstrate advanced research skills and in-depth knowledge over a long essay
Expected learning outcomes
Correlates with corresponding undergraduate topic, and in addition this topic will provide students with:

  • further developed skills in a range of research activities

  • the ability to communicate research skills and knowledge via written communication/assessment

  • advanced written communication skills

  • the skills to identify key issues in a specialised area of literary (or related) research

  • an advanced ability to analyse themes, issues and style in the texts

  • an advanced ability to recognise and critique the key theoretical issues raised by reading the texts in question
