Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the mechanical behaviour, characteristics and failure analysis of metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the structures, classifications, applications and properties of various engineering materials
  2. Understand the different damage and failure mechanisms of various engineering materials
  3. Analyse fatigue and fracture in engineering materials to predict their strength and life when used for machines, vehicles, and structures
  4. Understand the structure-and-properties relationships of polymers and composites
  5. Practise mechanical characterisations of metallic and polymeric materials
