Topic description

This topic comprises 12 weeks of work experience as approved by the topic co-ordinator.

Educational aims

The aim of this topic is to provide some work experience of at least 12 weeks in duration in a real industrial environment for preparing students for their future role as professional engineers.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the structure, operation and responsibilities, and business culture of a company or organisation
  2. Contribute to technical projects as an individual orteam member
  3. Critically describe the influences of commercial, economic, social, cultural, political, legal, industrial and environmental issues affecting companies, organisations and employees that undertake engineering work
  4. Synthesize and apply skills and knowledge already acquired in their course
  5. Appreciate the responsibilities, roles, attitudes, values, priorities, judgement and work methods of practising professional engineers in industry
  6. Appreciate the overall manner in which engineering is practised and managed
  7. Participate as a member of an engineering team, understanding the roles and valuing all members of that team
