Topic description
Sensors and the principles of measurement of physiological and medical parameters; the origin of biopotentials (ECG, EEG, EMG, EOG, FECG, ERG, etc); biopotential electrodes and amplifiers; measurement and analysis of blood pressure and heart sounds; blood flow and blood volume measurement systems; measurement of respiration.
Educational aims
This topic introduces students to the principles and practice of the measurement of physiological and medical parameters, including medical instruments commonly used in modern hospitals and clinics. This will be achieved by studying and experimenting with the physical principles of the sensor and its interaction with the human body, and the instrumentation required to measure, process and present this signal to the user.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  2. Understand the principles of operation of transducers, amplifiers and signal processing methods used in medical instrumentation
  3. Understand the origin of biopotentials (ECG, EEG, EMG, FECG, ERG, etc.)
  4. Use the terminology of medicine and medical devices to communicate with health care and engineering professionals
  5. Describe, analyse and design biopotential electrodes & amplifiers
