Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge of fluid flow, laws of thermodynamics, heat transfer and combustion.
Topic description
Navier-Stokes equations; laminar and turbulent boundary layers; combustion; equilibrium and rate controlled reactions; ignition, stability and flammability limits; detonation; Reciprocating engines.
Educational aims
The topic aims to ensure that the students have a basic understanding of the following:

  1. Applying the equations of fluid mechanics to model various flows
  2. Interactions between the ocean and surface/submerged ships
  3. Combustion, ignition and detonation
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Apply Navier-Stokes equations to boundary layer flows
  2. Perform analysis on laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layers
  3. Understand combustion and chemical thermodynamics
  4. Working of spark ignition and Diesel engines
