Topic description
This topic provides students with an understanding of the theory and application of structural mechanics and structural design. Emphasis is placed on teaching the fundamental concepts via hand calculations before applying these concepts to large scale buildings via software packages. The structural mechanics content includes: Calculations of deformations in statically determinate and indeterminate structures by force method, unit load method, slope-deflection method and moment-area theorem; Influence lines applied to beams and trusses. The structural design content includes Australian Standard procedures for: General design and load combinations; Steel beam design; Steel column design; Concrete beam design; Concrete column design; Concrete slab design. The software packages covered include: 2D analysis of frames and beams (Strand7); 3D analysis of flexural beams (ANSYS); Design of steel structures (SPACE GASS).
Educational aims
Structural engineering deals with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. All civil engineers must understand the range of tools, materials and techniques available for constructing structures. This is the second of two topics dealing with these issues and focuses mainly on concrete, masonry and composite structures.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand how to determine internal member forces for 2D frames
  2. Perform structural mechanic calculations for determining forces, deflections and slopes for statically determinate and indeterminate beams, frames and trusses
  3. Determine influence lines for moving loads on beams and trusses
  4. Understand 2D and 3D structural analysis software for application of structural mechanics to large scale structures
  5. Determine structural design actions according to Australian Standards
  6. Perform Australian Standard structural engineering design procedures applicable to steel columns, beams and bolted or welded connections
  7. Perform Australian Standard structural engineering design procedures applicable to reinforced concrete beams, columns and slabs
  8. Understand 3D structural design software for design of a steel structure that adheres to the Australian Standards
