Topic description
Fundamental elements of power electronic systems including the diode and diode circuits, and the thyristor and thyristor circuits; DC to DC and DC to AC switching converters; electronic drives used to control different types of DC and AC machines.

The educational aims of the topic are:

  1. To develop knowledge of the fundamental principles related to power electronics
  2. To enhance understanding of the difficulties and limitations related to the practical implementation of power electronics within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
