Topic description
Electronic design for manufacture: signal transmission, design for signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility, advanced routing techniques, multi-channel design, design accounting for mechanical, manufacturing and commercial constraints.

Design project: design methodologies, identifying client needs, assessment and evaluation of engineering designs, developing design specifications, project management and documentation, teamwork, leadership and mentoring, self-reflection, creativity and innovation.
Educational aims
To develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of electronic design, through studying and applying

  1. Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined electronic engineering design problems

  2. The integration of theory and methods across the range of electronic engineering subjects

  3. The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs

  4. Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements

Project management and documentation methods and tools in the electronic engineering context, eg ISO9001

  5. The variety of roles in electronic engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring

  6. Creativity, innovation and self-reflection

The use of professional electronic design tools
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of electronic design

  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to complex electronic engineering design problems

  3. Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills appropriate for a professional engineer

  4. Use electronic design, project management and documentation methods and tools
