Topic description
This topic will see students undertake the design of a major piece of Civil Engineering Infrastructure, this includes projects such as road upgrades, major buildings, land divisions and bridges are all examples of some of the specific infrastructure that could be designed within this topic. Students will apply the knowledge they have obtained in at least two of the four major areas of civil engineering (geotechnical, transport, structural and water engineering). Guest lectures, workshops and computer labs from Industry representatives that have experience in the design and construction of large infrastructure projects will be a feature of the topic.
Educational aims
To develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of civil design, through studying and applying:

  1. Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined civil engineering design problems
  2. The integration of theory and methods across the range of civil engineering subjects
  3. The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs
  4. Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements
  5. Project management and documentation methods and tools in the civil engineering context
  6. The variety of roles in civil engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring
  7. Creativity, innovation and self-reflection
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Have a advanced understanding the Civil Engineering Design Process
  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to complex civil engineering design problems
  3. Understand how the design of infrastructure contributes to the community
  4. Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills appropriate for a professional engineer
