Topic description
Introduction; bonding and structure of crystalline materials; fracture mechanics; fatigue of materials; stress-based approach to fatigue; strain-based approach to fatigue; fatigue crack growth in materials; creep in materials.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of fracture, fatigue and creep behaviour of engineering materials and their analysis.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand mechanical behaviour of materials under loading
  2. Apply linear elastic fracture mechanics to analyse the behaviour of materials with cracks
  3. Understand different responses from materials based on their mechanical properties and type of failure
  4. Understand and apply stress and strain based approaches to fatigue analysis in materials
  5. Understand and analyse fatigue crack growth and creep behaviour in materials
  6. Practise creep, fracture and fatigue testing of materials
