Topic description
Introduction; metal casting processes; forming and shaping processes including metal rolling, metal forging, metal extrusion and drawing, sheet metal forming; welding processes; powder metal processes; rapid-prototyping processes and operations; machining processes; computer-aided manufacturing.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of different manufacturing processes and forming of materials with relevant fundamentals and real-world practices.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand detailed descriptions of different manufacturing and metal forming processes
  2. Apply theory and fundamentals and analyse manufacturing related problems and defects in materials
  3. Understand new technologies, computer-aided manufacturing and rapid-prototyping processes
  4. Practise a number of manufacturing processes (casting, welding, forming and machining) and examine the processed materials
