Topic description
This topic introduces the four core areas within civil engineering (Geomechanics, Structures, Transport and Water) and shows how each of the core areas forms part of integrated infrastructure systems and that entire system needed to be considered in the design of a solution.

All four areas are discussed as well as engineering design principles, project costing, discounted cash flow and nett present value.
Educational aims
To give students an understanding of the various specialisations in civil engineering, and an understanding of the civil engineering design process and methods for project evaluation.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the range of civil engineering specialisations
  2. Apply the Civil Engineering design process
  3. Execute a range of project evaluation skills
  4. Report on and present a design
