Topic description
The topic will cover the geometric design of road alignments, including the use and interpretation of survey information, associated earthworks and drainage calculations and application of software design tools. This will include an introduction to the civil engineering design process including the interaction of the specialisations and disciplines of civil engineering. Design specification, concept development, testing and evaluation will all be integrated into the design process. Engineering reports of all aspects of the design will be produced as well as an overview of Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems.
Educational aims
All civil engineers must have sound knowledge of design techniques and the tools available to civil engineers. The aim of this topic is to present an introduction to civil engineering design and to ensure that students are familiar with civil engineering processes and tools.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the major tools and processes used in civil engineering design
  2. Complete a small-scale civil engineering design project
  3. Understand and synthesise the multi-disciplinary nature of civil engineering projects
  4. Effectively apply and evaluate design process principles (i.e. problem identification, concept generation, concept selection and design embodiment)
  5. Demonstrate communication skills (e.g. logical cohesion, writing a research paper, integrating evidence and the effective presentation)
  6. Demonstrate project management skills (e.g. materials selection, sourcing and budgeting)
  7. Demonstrate a high level of professional skills (e.g. team work, record keeping)
  8. Understanding of OH&S principles and practices
  9. Synthesise design processes and practical applications, in a report format
