Topic description
This topic comprises at least 12 weeks of work experience as approved by the topic co-ordinator.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide work experience of at least 12 weeks in duration in a real industrial environment for preparing students for their future role as professional engineers.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the structure, operation and responsibilities, and business culture of a company or organisation
  2. Contribute to technical projects as an individual or team member
  3. Contribute to the management of team processes as appropriate
  4. Critically describe the influences of commercial, economic, social, cultural, political, legal, industrial and environmental issues affecting companies, organisations and employees that undertake engineering work
  5. Synthesize and apply skills and knowledge already acquired in their course
  6. Evaluate the responsibilities, roles, attitudes, values, priorities, judgement and work methods of practising professional engineers in industry
  7. Appreciate the overall manner in which engineering is practised and managed and the role of the team in engineering
  8. Participate as a member of an engineering team, understanding the roles and valuing all members of that team
