Topic description
Practical, special and three-phase transformers theory and applications; DC machine loss measurements, windings construction, armature reaction, improvement of commutation, speed control and its dynamics; Measured and calculated parameter/performance characteristics of three-phase induction motors including the equivalent circuit and circular diagram analytical tools;

Introduction to VSDs (Variable Speed Drives) applications with an emphasis on a protection and harmonic elimination related to their selection and installation; Construction and analysis of single phase induction motor including torque/speed characteristics, principals of operation and the equivalent circuit.

Experimentally obtained synchronous machine equivalent circuit parameters related to detailed machine theory and analysis.

Overview on special machines;

Basic concepts of power generation, transmission and distribution systems.
Educational aims
The educational aims of this topic are:

  1. to introduce the concepts of electrical energy systems and the processes of energy conversion
  2. To study the analysis, operation and design of common electrical energy systems, such as transformers, motors, machines and driving circuitry
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Capable to apply learnt content in the everyday engineering practice and communicate in writing desired outcomes to wider audience
