Topic description
This topic provides a broad introduction to inter-related global environmental, economic and cultural issues. The topic aims to heighten students' appreciation of the entangled nature of human and environmental activities and to point to some of the difficulties associated with sharing the 'spaceship Earth' to which we are all confined. The topic will also discuss and illustrate the power of individuals to effect change within the global context.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Provide you with a broad introduction to some of the relationships between environment, economy and culture and heighten your appreciation of their interconnected character
- Point to some of the difficulties associated with sharing the 'spaceship Earth' to which we are all confined
- Provide you with the resources and opportunities to develop a variety of skills (e.g. oral, written and graphic communication; information management; group work) that can be transferred to other academic and employment areas
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
- Explain how global capitalism structures both environmental and cultural change
- Discuss how nature is represented by maps, language and science
- Identify the different scales and actors involved in environmental decision-making
- Critically assess environmental information from a variety of sources
- Learn how to become engaged in local and regional environmental issues
- Communicate effectively in a variety of public forums
