Topic description
This topic introduces students to the range of skills utilised by environmental professionals. The topic covers collection and analysis of environmental variables; the use of environmental decision making tools; the use of personal computers in environmental research for statistical analysis and charting. Students will produce written reports of a standard expected of environmental professionals.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide students with skills commonly used by environmental professionals throughout the world. It concentrates on a number of practical, field, laboratory and personal computing skills.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this opic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Collect, analyse, map and chart a range of geographical and environmental data using a variety of software packages
  2. Use appropriate environmental decision making tools
  3. Manage computer files using the Windows operating system
  4. Competently analyse data using a variety of software packages
  5. Write basic reports combining results from several software packages
