ENVS8701 has been successfully completed

This topic provides an overview of key coastal issues and problems facing coastal managers globally. The concept of integrated coastal management (ICM) is explored using current approaches to ICM through policy and practice in Australia. The roles and responsibilities of agencies and the community in managing the coast are explored. Specific themes of climate change and marine resource exploitation are utilised as contemporary examples of complex coastal management problems along with their potential planning and management approaches.

The topic aims for this topic are to:

1. Have a raised awareness of the interaction of human activity on the coastal environment and the environmental management implications of this interaction
2. Have developed an understanding of the concept of integrated coastal management (ICM)
3. Explore how coasts are currently managed (institutional and practical management schemes) in a range of contexts
4. Examine current coastal management problems and their associated management strategies

At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

1. Provide a detailed explanation of a significant contemporary coastal management problem relating it to the interaction of the human and natural environment
2. Explain the principles of integrated coastal management
3. Assess coastal management arrangements in specific locations against the principles of integrated coastal management
4. Evaluate the adequacy of the various coastal management arrangements in place in different contexts
