Topic description
The topic aims to provide students with an appreciation of a range of environmental changes in Australia. This involves study of techniques used to recognise and assess environmental change and the application of field and research skills. A series of case studies address ecological change and implications for environmental management across urban and rural ecosystems and the interaction between plants, animals, soil and water.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an appreciation of the range environmental changes in Australia. This involves study of different temporal and spatial scales. Emphasis will be placed on a broad understanding of Australian environments and subsequent changes brought about by a range of natural and human causes. There will be a strong emphasis on research and writing skills.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:
- Detail characteristics of environmental change research
- Utilise a range of approaches to recognise, assess and analyse environmental change
- Utilise a variety of resources to investigate environmental change such as aerial photography, topographic maps, scholarly journal articles, historical records and field observations and measurements
- Conduct a focussed research project and write a concise report following manuscript guidelines for a refereed journal
