Course context
To be able to enrol in this topics students must have received a GPA average of distinction grade or higher in topics taken towards the Graduate Diploma or Masters in Environmental Management course, or equivalent as determined by the course Director of Studies and a credit grade or higher in a Research Methods topic, or equivalent as determined by the course Director of Studies.
Topic description
The topic requires students to define a research question, collect and evaluate information and provide a written paper (7,000 to 8,000 words) of the results placing the findings in the context of scholarly understanding on the topic. The research topic is to be chosen and conducted under the supervision of a member of staff.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  1. Provide an opportunity for students to develop an introductory understanding of research and the skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest, with the assistance of a supervisor
  2. Prepare successful graduates on how to approach small-scale research studies [Admission to a higher degree research program is restricted to applicants with a Class 1 or 2A or equivalent in an 18 unit research project]
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Define an appropriate research question and relate it to the relevant theoretical literature
  2. Design an appropriate research methodology to address a selected research question
  3. Collect, analyse and interpret data to address a selected research question
  4. Communicate research results clearly and concisely according to scholarly practice
