A GPA average of distinction grade or higher in all the preceding topics taken towards the Graduate Diploma/Masters in Environmental Management course, or equivalent as determined by the course Director of Studies, AND The student must have gained a credit grade or higher in a Research Methods topic, or equivalent as determined by the course Director of Studies.

The topic requires students to define a research question, collect and evaluate information and provide a written thesis (15,000 words) of the results placing the findings in the context of scholarly understanding on the topic. The research topic is to be chosen and conducted under the supervision of a member of staff.

The topic aims to:

Provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of research and the skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest
Prepare successful graduates on how to conduct research studies. [Admission to a higher degree research program is restricted to applicants with a Class 1 or 2A or equivalent in an 18 unit research project.]

At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

Define an appropriate research question and relate it to the relevant theoretical literature
Design an appropriate research methodology to address a selected research question
Collect, analyse and interpret data to address a selected research question
Communicate research results clearly and concisely according to scholarly practice
