Topic description
The topic explores the nature of environmental policy, environmental policy methodology, context of environmental policy, key ingredients on environmental policy development, and tools for environmental policy analysis. The topic has a practical focus and draws heavily on real-life examples of environmental policy development. The topic aims to prepare students to be able to contribute to the development of environmental policy at the local, state or national levels or in a private company context.
Educational aims
The topics aims to:

  1. Prepare students to contribute to the development of environmental policy at the local, state or national levels or in private industry
  2. Demonstrate the nature and role of 'policy' in sustainable environmental management
  3. Examine the methodologies and tools for environmental policy development
  4. Present some of the key ingredients in environmental policy development such as the role of consultation
  5. Provide the opportunity for students to practice the key skills required in policy developers
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts and methodology of environmental policy development
  2. Understand the role of environmental policy and the governance context in which it is developed in Australia and internationally
  3. Identify the keys to successful environmental policy development
  4. Understand the use of analytical and group tools to assist in environmental policy
