Topic description
This topic involves a research project that students undertake as part of their Masters. Students will be expected to design and carry-out an individual research project in an area of their choice under the supervision of an academic staff member. Students will undertake a written research report and seminar presentation.
Educational aims
This topic is designed to provide students with training in literature review, research methodology and the preparation of a professional thesis / report - from project conception, design of methods, collection of results and their analysis, through to final conclusions and recommendations for future work. In addition, it fosters the necessary communication, problem-based and critical thinking skills needed in water resource management and water professionals today by way of both a written report and seminar presentation on the project work carried out.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Have a sound understanding of a broad range of water resources management theory and concepts and be able to apply them to the solution of an applied problem in water resources management
  2. Design a project methodology in order to solve an applied problem or answering questions about water resources management
  3. Scientifically, technically and critically evaluate the results of their methods and analyses
  4. Draw well-informed conclusions about the problem/system being studied and make recommendations for future work
  5. Communicate their results in both in writing by way of a written thesis/report/paper on the subject matter and verbally by way of a seminar given to their peers on the project work carried out
