Topic description
These topics provide the research component (research project) of the Master of Environmental Health. The research project is to be developed in collaboration with one or more academic staff from the Health and Environment cluster. Additional collaborative input into the project will be provided primarily by SA Health or other State Health Departments and/or local government. Students will be encouraged to develop a project proposal with their employer (which can include those listed above, and other government and non-government organisations). The project will address a research gap identified by the collaborative partners.

The research component of the course will allow students to practice the theoretical skills gained in the detailed research of an issue of interest in the environmental health arena. The thesis component will also teach higher order skills of collation and critical interpretation of data, presentation of ideas in a coherent format and the ability to communicate these ideas in logical well-argued formats.
Educational aims
The aims of these topics are:

  1. For students to undertake a research project in environmental health
  2. To develop a project proposal, fulfil research ethics requirements, undertake research and write up research as a thesis
  3. Communicate the outcomes of their research (both in writing and as a presentation)
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to prepare a research proposal relevant to environmental health in collaboration with both internal and external agencies
  2. Demonstrate the ability to critically review existing literature in that area
  3. Demonstrate the ability to investigate an area relevant to environmental health and interpret the results arising from the research
  4. Communicate, through an oral presentation and a thesis, the research methods, results and be able to discuss them in their wider context
