Topic description
This topic presents an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of ESOL teaching and learning. The topic encourages students to develop their analytical and reflective skills, and to think critically about the relationship between theory and practice in the development of new knowledge in TESOL.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • create opportunity for participants to explore issues in teaching English as a second language

  • encourage participants to critique classroom practice

  • develop original disciplinary knowledge in the field of teaching English as a second or other language (ESOL)

  • use the critical analyses of knowledge in ESOL to develop original classroom learning experiences
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate critical understanding of current trends in TESOL

  • explain the relationship between theory and practice

  • identify and reflect on issues in own practice related to emerging issues in research

  • evaluate issues arising in classroom practice based on theoretical understanding and synthesis of a variety of pedagogical examples

  • analyse teacher and action research that leads to development of trends in ESOL
