Topic description
This topic explores the theoretical and practical aspects of language assessment. It covers basic concepts in assessment such as reliability, validity and authenticity, as well as a variety of tools and techniques for assessing language proficiency. This topic will give students a solid grounding for fairly and effectively assessing language proficiency in classroom contexts.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • raise awareness of assessment as an integral aspect of language teaching and learning

  • familiarise students with a variety of language assessment tools and techniques

  • enable development of appropriate classroom assessment practices
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • explain basic concepts in language assessment

  • describe language assessment tools and techniques which can be used in classroom contexts
