Topic description
This topic provides a foundation of the application of the theoretical underpinnings of methodologies used in ESL teaching to the practice of teaching. It focuses on critical analysis of the adaptation of methodologies, and a reflective approach to the self-evaluation of practice. Critical analysis of theory, policy and application of these is explored and original and creative recommendations arising out of this exploration is examined, resulting in an original and creative approach to practice

Students may have the option of completing a 10 hour practicum. Practicums and their assessment are to be organised in consultation with the topic coordinator.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop critical analysis of the approaches that inform classroom methodology

  • investigate and analyse creative planning of classroom learning experiences

  • examine the synthesis between learner motivation and successful learning outcomes

  • develop skills for the critical analysis of methodologies as used in TESOL

  • promote a reflective approach to practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate mastery in planning and implementing strategies for successful language learning, and the evaluation of their effectiveness

  • investigate and analyse issues relating to positive classroom experiences, and apply different theories and practices to facilitate learning

  • evaluate established methodologies of classroom practice, and apply them to the design of their own classroom practice
