Topic description
This topic explores concepts and theories of teaching English to speakers of other languages. It emphasises the development of pedagogical skill in the planning and organisation of lessons and units of work. An examination of a range of language teaching concepts will be explored, alongside the evaluation and integration of these concepts to develop a cohesive approach of teaching by principles
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • investigate and analyse disciplinary knowledge in the field of TESOL

  • develop knowledge and skills in pedagogical competence in TESOL

  • enable students to apply theoretical knowledge in TESOL contexts

  • examine established pedagogical theories to inform classroom practice

  • encourage creative and innovative planning of classroom learning experiences

  • examine the relationship between learner motivation and successful learning outcomes
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • investigate and analyse principles of language teaching

  • interpret theories and principles in language teaching and classroom practice, and analyse their relationship

  • reflect on the application of principles of language teaching to personal classroom practice

  • evaluate their own and others' classroom practice in relation to established theories of language teaching

  • synthesise principles of language teaching into one's own teaching approach
