Topic description
This topic examines the phenomenon of English as a global language. It investigates how English became the global language, and analyses issues raised by a global language and the implications of a global language for the teaching of English as a second or other language.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- investigate and analyse issues related to English as a global language
- develop skills to critically reflect on the role of English in the world
- examine theories related to the implication of the global language, and their relationship to classroom practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- critically analyse a theories on how English became the global language
- examine and discuss a range of arguments and perspectives on English as a global language
- critically analyse English as a global language, and reflect on the implications for classroom practice
- demonstrate mastery in the evaluation of their own and others' classroom practice in terms of the issues raised by English as a global language
