Topic description
This topic presents the principles surrounding human behaviour as applied to exercise participation and modification of health related behaviour. The topic aims to acquaint students with core aspects of exercise behaviour that have relevance to health promotion and physical activity participation. Students will review the social and biological aspects of human behaviour before applying these to influencing initiation and adherence to exercise. The acute and long term bio-psychological responses to exercise will be presented in the context of stress and mental health as well as health promotion in musculoskeletal injury and chronic pain states. Students will learn basic counselling and communication skills that can be applied in a clinical exercise context.
Educational aims
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • Describe the social and biological factors underlying human behaviour and how these are influence initiation and participation of exercise.

  • Describe the theories of behaviour change and strategies for behaviour modification related to exercise participation.

  • Define motivational theory and apply strategies to influence exercise and behaviour change.

  • Define self-confidence and self-efficacy theory related to exercise behaviour.

  • Describe strategies and guidelines for enhancing adherence to exercise

  • Describe the principles of effective goal setting and feedback as applied to physical activity.

  • Highlight and apply effective processes of counselling and communication to promote optimal exercise performance and participation.

  • Describe the acute and long term biological responses to exercise and how these impact on mood and mental health.

  • Describe the bio-psychological reactions and influences on to musculoskeletal injury and chronic pain and the role of psychology in injury rehabilitation.
