Topic description
In this topic students consider issues relating to French culture and society as illustrated in a selection of authentic written texts. Students may be offered a choice of monographic studies, short stories, plays and novels relating to French or francophone literature. Regular offerings include contemporary French authors (from late 20th Century) and Canadian literature, as well as projects on specific authors.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide opportunities for the development or consolidation of students' background knowledge of socio-cultural issues related to French literature and society

  • develop learners' critical and analytical skills through the study of contemporary texts
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • summarise and illustrate historical, artistic and social developments related to cultural components, and use them as context for the interpretation, comparison and critiquing of texts

  • identify and organise relevant research material in order to produce sound academic texts
