Topic description
This topic provides students with an introduction to the electronic garment design tools (Adobe suite Illustrator, Photoshop and In Design). Students will develop a range of skills in textile design, technical drawing, including the links to the production process, presentation, packaging and trick design (including crop marks, bleed and registration marks, and label design), and the use of a range of digital media platforms for production and marketing.

Students will develop a cohesive range of garment design skills and the ability to apply them to produce Garment Illustrations, trade flats, and/or working sketches. The topic allows the student to produce an online portfolio with a representation of their work.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • explore design options and technical accuracy in relation to electronic digital presentation of garment design

  • develop the ability for independent learning and critical observation

  • explore issues related to design aesthetics, economics and communication

  • introduce industry requirements for fashion/costume and textile production
Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that on completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • display a professional level of industry presentation and currency relating to standard and quality of design work

  • demonstrate confidence and proficiency in the use of the design tools

  • identify the market prescribed in the employment of digital media strategies

  • demonstrate the ability to create artwork for digital textile printing, and fashion/costume garment production purposes, in an Australian or off-shore context

  • demonstrate the ability to present design work in a technically accurate and professional manner
