Environment and Society examines the interrelationships of space, place and environment. Students of this topic will investigate the interactions between environments and communities across local to global scales, while developing key learning and communication skills to enhance their undergraduate studies. Students are encouraged to consider why environmental phenomena and relationships are like they are and how they could be; how societies and environments are connected to one another; how and why they change; and how and why their characteristics vary across time and space at different scales.

This topic aims to introduce students to the core concepts and themes of Geography and Environmental Studies, while developing key critical thinking, analysis and communication skills needed for their undergraduate degrees and beyond. Students will develop an understanding of the connections and interdependencies between the environment and society at local, regional and global levels.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the concepts of Space, Place and Environment and their important interconnections

2. Relate processes of environmental change to human activities in Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region

3. Collaborate effectively with peers

4. Communicate clearly for a range of purposes and audiences

5. Analyse and interpret a variety of data in various formats commonly used for studies of geography and the natural environment.
