Course context
Topic only available to students meeting the eligibility requirements for entry to the postgraduate health administration programs. Students must have permission to undertake, or be involved in, practical process redesign activities in their workplace.

This topic is delivered in collaboration with senior staff of the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network. The workshops will include short course participants who are senior clinicians/professionals and clinician managers who are not completing a postgraduate qualification in health administration. Entry is competitive. Eligible students must contact the Administrative Officer, Health Care Management, if they wish to include this elective on their study plan.

Topic description
Attendance at workshops is compulsory.

Evolution of lean thinking in healthcare, lean thinking principles (value, value stream, flow, pull, perfection), value stream mapping, process tracking, lean leadership, communication tools, lean tools, success factors, change management, intervention (PDSA cycles), problem-solving, continuous improvement.
Educational aims
To enhance students' skills in the application of lean thinking to clinical or non-clinical process redesign, implementation and evaluation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Complete a detailed diagnostic of the current process to be redesigned using mapping and real-time observation

  • Identify and use relevant lean thinking tools to analyse processes, prioritise opportunities for improvement, monitor and evaluate progress

  • Organise and lead a process redesign

  • Demonstrate a participative approach to process redesign through involvement of relevant stakeholders, including clients, in various aspects of the process

  • Present the result of a redesign process in verbal and written A3 report format
