Topic description
Every managerial activity involves communication. This topic explores some of the key dimensions of managerial communication in health and aged care. Topics covered include interpersonal communication, corporate communication and public relations, issues and crisis management, corporate social responsibility, consumer participation and health communication.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to provide students with an understanding of internal and external communication tasks and processes in health and aged care organisations and the role Health Communication plays in improving health equity, as well as healthcare and population health outcomes.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • describe and discuss a range of communication concepts relevant to the health and aged care manager

  • identify and address potential barriers to effective interpersonal communication

  • apply an understanding of small group dynamics to achieve effective meeting outcomes

  • formulate communication strategies for enhancing staff engagement and organisational effectiveness, and for managing organisational change

  • employ a structured approach to issues and crisis management, including media relations and stakeholder management

  • understand health communication strategies aimed at improving population health outcomes, health care outcomes and health equity

  • understand how the ‘social media’ are changing the nature of health communication.
