Topic description
The topic examines current trends in risk management. In particular, it explores the content and relationship between: medico-legal issues; consumer rights and services; occupational health systems; quality of service strategies; the systems and structures for the management of the law: medicine interface.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of a risk management tool (the current Australia and New Zealand Risk Management Standards) and its particular application in the health care system. This includes the integration of risk management within the overall management task and its application to the professional culture of health care organisations, in the form of clinical governance.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic students should have:

  • An ability to use the Guidelines for Managing Risk in the Health Sector associated with the current AS/NZS Risk Management Standards, in their work setting.

  • A grounded understanding of the application of clinical governance in health care organisations.

  • A general appreciation of risk management in other organisational settings.

  • An appreciation of the use of quality improvement techniques in clinical governance.

  • An introduction to the legislative and regulatory requirements of health care organisations.

  • An understanding of the link between clinical and corporate governance.

  • An appreciation of emerging trends in clinical governance and risk management.

  • A knowledge of resources and sources of information about clinical governance and risk management.
