Topic description
Theoretical models, concepts and analytical techniques used and their relevance at the macro and micro levels within the discipline of health economics
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce students to basic economic concepts and their application to policy and resource allocation decisions in health and aged care.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • describe the general working of a market economy

  • explain the special economic characteristics particular to health and aged care and their implications for policy

  • identify the key economic issues associated with the financing and delivery of national health or aged care systems

  • demonstrate an understanding of basic economic analytical techniques employed within the health and aged care sectors in allocating (rationing) resources

  • appreciate the methodology and analysis of the economic evaluation of health or aged care programmes

  • critically analyse key features and issues underlying health and aged care reform in Australia and overseas
