Topic description
Theories and models of ethical reasoning, major ethical orientations found in modern settings, current ethical issues and debates, the ethical responsibilities associated with managerial and professional roles in health care.
Educational aims
This topic familiarises students with the critical analysis of ethical issues that influence health service management and public health and explores the role of the health service manager or practitioner in the analysis and resolution of ethical problems within various health settings.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic, students should be able to:

  • reflect critically on personal bases for moral action

  • identify the major ethical orientations in current debates

  • critically analyse the nature of some of the ethical issues central to health care management and public health, and

  • understand the role of the health service manager or practitioner in the analysis and resolution of ethical problems.
