Course context
This is a component of an 18 unit topic. Students must enrol in other components and complete the full number of units for the topic.
Topic description
The thesis is an opportunity for Honours students to intensively research a particular area of history. The product of this research is a thesis of up to18,000 words that demonstrates an original contribution to historical knowledge.
Educational aims
This topic offers:
- A strong knowledge of differing perspectives on historical events and agents and how these perspectives contribute to historical discourse within the profession and more broadly
- A strong knowledge of the disciplinary nature of history, its disciplinary history, its methodology, and its role in the community
- The ability to undertake extended and detailed historical research and reporting
- The ability to effectively communicate a nuanced knowledge and understanding of historical events and concepts in a range of written and oral forms
- The ability to work independently with both primary and secondary sources.
Expected learning outcomes
Students successfully completing this topic should be able to:
- work independently with the primary and historiographical literature pertaining to an area of historical study
- appreciate the complexities, characteristics and legacies of varying interpretative approaches
- consolidate their communication skills through extended discussion and reasoned argument
- locate, collect, interpret, organise and synthesise a range of historical sources to develop a coherent argument
- plan, research and write an academic thesis.
