Topic description
A survey of recent development in the methods and findings in social history, with special attention to relations with other social sciences.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to changes that have been taking place in the research and writing of History in the past quarter of century or so. These changes will be seen as part of the intellectual changes of our time. The topic will investigate the influences which affect the recent evolution of history as a scholarly activity and as a social and political phenomenon.This involves a sense of the historical emergence of the subject as well as a familiarity with current directions.
Expected learning outcomes
Students successfully completing the topic should be able to write coherent and informed commentaries on some of the central developments in modern historiography. They will obtain a sophisticated understanding of the problems of modern historical research and some of the methodological and philosophical considerations which are entailied in historical research including the creation and interpretation of diverse forms of evidence.
