Graduate Diploma in Applied History and Heritage Studies
Topic description
This topic allows students undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Applied History and Heritage Studies to work on a history project in close collaboration with a supervisor in a chosen area. With the assistance of the appointed supervisor the student will choose, design and then develop a project to the point of completion. Normally the form of the completed project will be a written, scholarly work of 12,000 to15,000 words. However, projects in other media which the topic convenor deems to be appropriate and requiring an equivalent investment of time and effort will also be accepted. The primary areas in which projects may be chosen are:- genealogy, museum studies, archaeology, local history and heritage studies. The topic entails regular contact with the supervisor and independently pursued work on the project.

This topic aims to:
  • develop skills in applied historical work
  • undertake sustained work in an area of the student's interest and knowledge
  • encourage and facilitate independent work
  • develop skills in the presentation of work to an appropriate scholarly standard
  • foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation that encourages students to both learn through collaboration and to become independent and critical thinkers
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • undertake independent historical research to a professional standard
  • identify, access and use appropriate forms of historical evidence
  • reflect on the theoretical and methodological issues encountered in the course of their guided study project
  • demonstrate the acquisition of skills transferable to the conduct of similar projects
  • present their findings to an advanced scholarly standard
