Topic description
This topic focuses on assessment within health professional programs with a particular emphasis on assessment in health workplace settings. The role of assessment within curriculum will be identified and current approaches to assessment including programmatic assessment will be discussed. Differences and similarities of assessment approaches across health professional programs will be explored. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own assessment experiences and how assessment approaches introduced during the topic apply to their own clinical work setting. Students will be encouraged to critically appraise assessment practice from their own workplace setting through project work.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • Introduce students to the major functions and characteristics of effective assessment in health professional programs

  • Assist students to understand the role of assessment within curriculum

  • Enable students to critically appraise assessment processes for quality practice

  • Enable students to consider their own roles in assessment within their work context.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Define the major elements of effective assessment

  • Recognise and develop different forms of assessment

  • Indicate the essential elements of a programmatic approach to assessment in clinical education

  • Contrast a range of approaches to assessment across health professional programs
