Topic description
The role of the health professional in clinical education includes the ability to engage in reflective practice. This topic is designed to support educators as learners to create conditions for critically reflective learning. This topic encourages health professionals to consider reflective practice for lifelong learning as well as to role model and develop reflective practice in collaboration with colleagues.
Educational aims
At the completion of this topic participants will have an understanding of the theoretical concepts of the use of reflective practice and reflective assessment tools for both clinical practice and professional development. Educators and health professionals will increase their knowledge and skills to encourage critically reflective learning and practice, through evaluating what influences their own teaching and learning context and values and engaging in reflective dialogue and writing. By experiencing socially constructed learning the clinical educator will be able to assist future students with engaging in reflection for learning.
Expected learning outcomes
On the completion of this topic, students will be able to

  • Understand the principles of adult learning and how they relate to personal approaches to teaching and learning

  • Analyse the theories, methods and models of critical & transformative reflection

  • Implement reflective practice and reflective dialogue skills

  • Use critical reflection to generate strategies to improve clinical teaching, learning & practice

  • Understand the context of departmental as well as individual reflection to ensure professional and continuing development as an educator

  • Recognise that reflection learning styles may be influenced by differing cultures and experiences

  • Understand the position and role of the educator in order to promote critical reflection in debriefing and group facilitation

  • Practice critical reflective writing skills through journal writing and peer review

  • Begin your own teaching portfolio with reference to the literature
