Topic description
The topic explores issues related to nutrition and physical activity in school sites as a setting for health promotion. It will deal specifically with the ways in which school health promotion can be used to advance the well-being of young people with a focus on nutrition and physical activity.
Educational aims
This topic will examine the role of the school as a setting for health promotion with a focus on the development of nutrition education and physical activity programs to promote healthy weight and healthy lifestyles.
Expected learning outcomes
At the conclusion of the topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • an increased awareness of the current state and federal government programs being implemented to address the issue of healthy weight through nutrition and physical activity
  • enhanced knowledge of the role of health promotion as a potential strategy to develop sustainable nutrition and physical activity programs in school settings
  • an understanding of the complex relationship between providing knowledge and shaping behaviour, in the development of healthy attitudes toward nutrition and physical activity
  • knowledge about the range of factors which impact upon the provision of positive nutrition and physical activity education programs in schools and a range of strategies they can use to address them
